DEAD STOCK DROP
about dead stock drop
it is on the edge of things where we can gain perspective. when staring into the void ahead, we see. possibility. or its absence. since covid a lot has changed for the fashion industry.
we used to take it for granted. our generation could ‘shop til we drop’ and call it ‘retail therapy’. we would get dopamine hits from the abundance and worry-free indulgence. i used to own over 400 pairs of shoes. trust me. i get it. until i started to get to know the industry better.

the mood
what it takes to be able to walk into any store in any city of the world at any time and expect shelves and racks filled with all our dream clothes in exactly our size and colour. it takes a village to raise a child but it takes several planets to sustain this attitude we have been wearing like a mandatory mask for years. it is simply too much taking, and most of it is for granted.
extremes are not the hottest take on things, but they can create the pressure needed to inspire a change of heart. while i have lost that heart of mine to fashion ages ago, our relationship has become somewhat of a situationship over the years. looking at fashion, i used to be glamoured but lately the glamour feels more like a curse. i refuse to believe all this greed and quick fixes are going to keep us enchanted for much longer. in my mind, i kept going through all the things that annoyed me in fashion. the idea of local seasons within a global industry. the fashion police dictating what is hot and what is not, thus overruling all personal expression of identity. the blatant display of our current concept of ‘wealth’ and how it is mostly obtained by walking over the backs of people less wealthy.

i simply cannot do it. to be a maker and not consider the how, where and by whom my product is made. what will happen to it once it is no longer used or wanted. i can not claim to ‘empower people’, knowing full well i am exploiting others for profit. i wont settle for compromise.
